As you may already know, probiotics play an important role in helping you keep a healthy gut and strengthening your immune system. Are you aware of how beneficial they are for your skin? You will be once you get through reading this!

In this post, I am going to explain what probiotics and prebiotics are, how they benefit your skin, and which ones you should be using. So, just keep reading to have all your questions answered about they’re going to help you in looking and feeling younger.

What are probiotics?

Probiotics

First, your body is home to trillions of microorganisms, and the ones that reside on your skin are referred to as the microbiome. If your microbiome gets disrupted, then it can lead to things like premature or accelerated aging, acne, Psoriasis, Eczema, and Rosacea.

Probiotics can be referred to as “beauty bugs” or good bacteria in skin care. They protect your skin from being invaded by bad bacteria. It’s the same concept as the probiotics, or good bacteria, for your gut, which improves your overall health and helps slow aging.

What are prebiotics?

Simply put, they are the food for probiotics. The prebiotics stimulates the growth of your healthy bugs which then produce postbiotics. Postbiotics are peptides, enzymes, organic acids, and polysaccharides that reinforce the healthy barrier of your skin.

How probiotics work in skincare

When you apply probiotics directly to your skin, they protect your skin from environmental pollutants, fight against bad bacteria, balance the skin’s pH, stimulate collagen and elastin, increase hydration, plump fine lines and wrinkles, and, as you have already read, reinforce the skin’s barrier.

Probiotics don’t have to be absorbed deeply because they are more effective in staying on the outer layer.

Should I take a probiotic supplement?

As with any supplement, ask your doctor first. However, adding a probiotic supplement can help you keep the right balance of probiotics in your gut. This, in turn, will aid your digestion, and not only will your skin benefit from receiving all the right nutrients but also your hair and nails.

What foods have probiotics?Probiotic Foods

I am sure you know yogurt is a famous probiotic food but there are also several more. The majority of fermented foods such as sauerkraut, pickles, miso, cheeses, and sour cream contain probiotics. Other foods include tempeh, kimchi, kefir, kombucha, and sourdough bread.

Yogurt also makes for a great probiotic facial. Just apply and leave on for 15 minutes and rinse.

What are other ways to protect my skin’s microbiome?

1. Don’t over-exfoliate- Exfoliate 2 to maybe 3 times a week and avoid harsh scrubbing.

2. Increase fiber intake- Foods that are rich in fiber such as oats, barley, and asparagus are also great sources of prebiotics. As you read before, prebiotics promotes the growth of probiotics.

3. Limit the use of antibiotics if possible- They destroy your good bacteria.

  1. Thank you very much for this valuable and detailed post about Probiotics Important For Anti-Aging. This is really a very important post. I really didn’t know much about this. I learned a lot from this post. Probiotics are really important for our skin. Keep posting like this. I definitely share this.

  2. Thank you for sharing this interesting article / Anti-aging skincare. I suffer from eczema so I appreciate your article. I know a lot about probiotic and the importance of good gut health.  I love eating yogurt -both frozen or just chilled, however I have never used it in a face mask. Can you use flavored yogurt or do you just recommend natural yogurt?

    1. All of the recipes I have seen for a yogurt face mask say to use plain yogurt. You can add one teaspoon of honey and 2-3 drops of your favorite essential oil. Use lavender oil for a calming effect.

      Thanks for your comment.
