Have you been giving your lips as much attention as the rest of your skin? If not, donโ€™t feel bad.ย

I am guilty of neglecting my lips as well. By neglect, I mean I would do little more than a swipe or two of some chapstick.

I have used a lip serum occasionally, but it turns out our lips need just as much love and care as the rest of our faces.

Having seen all the lip scrubs, masks, and serums pop up all over, got me wondering what more I needed to do for my lips.

So, I scoured the internet to find out what the experts recommend. Here is what I found.

Start with protecting your lips

Iโ€™d be willing to bet you already know what I am going to say. But be honest, when you put your SPF on your face in the morning, did it cross your mind to put it on your lips?

As dedicated as I am to my skincare routine, I honestly didnโ€™t think about my lips. Of course, I moisturize my lips, but I never paid attention to whether or not they had SPF.ย

Itโ€™s sad, I know, but I have learned the error in my ways.ย

So, itโ€™s just as important to protect your lips from the sun as it is the rest of your skin. SPF 30 or above will do and reapply throughout the day, especially if youโ€™re going to be out in the sun.

Keep them moisturized

Unless your lips are chapped or just feeling a little dry, you may not think to give them a couple of swipes with some moisture.

However, they need to stay lubricated to keep them from drying out and becoming cracked or flaky.

You can use a good chapstick, lip serum, or petroleum jelly.

Exfoliate

Yes, you can exfoliate your lips. And there are exfoliating treatments available specifically for the lips. Exfoliating your lips will do the same as it does for the skin by removing dead skin cells. This will help your skin cell turnover along with better absorption of any products you apply.ย

You donโ€™t want to over-exfoliate, though. It will lead to irritation, so about once or twice a week should suffice.

You can use a lip exfoliator, a clean toothbrush, or a washcloth to help increase circulation and give them some plumpness.

Just be sure to apply a nourishing balm or serum with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or peptides to lock in moisture, fill any lines you may have, and help diminish lip wrinkles.

Lip Mask

There are several reasonably priced lip masks on the market now. The question is which one should you use?

When searching for certain products that I am not familiar with, I see what others recommend, then look up the product and read the reviews.ย

The lip mask I found, which I canโ€™t wait to try, is YUGLO Moisture & Collagen Booster Lip Sleeping Mask.ย ย It has several thousand 5-star ratings and one reviewer said it was better than the high-end products she had tried.

With ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and peach extract, it promises to moisturize, rejuvenate, soothe, tighten, firm, and plump your lips.

Even though itโ€™s a sleeping mask, you can wear it during the day as well.ย

Choose Peach Scentedย orย Vanillaย Scented.

Lip serums

Lip serums differ from lip balms because they penetrate deeper into the lips. Whereas lip balms add a layer of protection and keep moisture in the lips.

What ingredients should you look for in a lip serum?

Since the skin on your lips is thin and requires more hydration, hyaluronic acid is definitely one to look for. One molecule of hyaluronic acid can hold about a thousand times its weight in water. That makes it a must-have ingredient for retaining moisture.

Collagen peptides are also a natural way to hydrate, along with giving your lips a more plump look to them. Adding a collagen peptide supplement would be of huge benefit not just for your lips but for all your skin!ย

Collagen peptides have also proven to be highly effective in diminishing fine lines and wrinkles.

You can use the retinol that you use at night to stimulate collagen and speed up cell turnoverย on your lips for the same benefits.

If you are not looking to spend even more money on a separate serum for your lips, then the eye cream you use for the delicate skin under your eyes can be applied to your lips as well. Even a vitamin C cream!

Try immediate lip plumpersplump pink lips

For a quick fix, apply lip balms, oils, or lipsticks that have a tingle. The tingling action increases blood flow to your lips making them look fuller, plumper, and youthful.

ย Products that reflect light will also help diminish the look of lip lines and wrinkles. Another way to reflect light is by applying some highlighter on your Cupidโ€™s Bow or over your lip color in the center of your lips.

Facial exercises & massage

Exercising and massaging your face and lips is going to increase circulation, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the skin. You will also stimulate the production of collagen and it will give your lips temporary plumpness.

You can also pair these exercises with a vibrating tool or a microdermabrasion roller to help with stimulating collagen. Both of these will also plump your lips.

Consider a trip to the office

If topical treatments arenโ€™t getting the job done, then a chemical peel or quick shot from a laser may do you some good. Both treatments go a little deeper into your skin to reduce lines and wrinkles and improve tone and texture.

Lip fillers can bring volume and definition back to the border around your lips. Now, when I say fillers, I donโ€™t mean plumping them until you could use them as a flotation device! Just some subtle volume and definition.

Why would you have lip lines and wrinkles in the first place?

There are several contributing factors why you could develop lip lines and wrinkles.ย

1. Loss of collagen โ€“ย As you get older, your body will produce less collagen. Collagen production actually starts slowing down in your mid to late 20s. Collagen gives your skin its bounce and firmness.

2. Smoking-ย Smoking destroys your collagen. The smokerโ€™s lines form from continuously pursing your lips together.

3. Use of straws-ย Same as smoking, the constant pursing of your lips will cause those lines to form.

4. Sun-ย As you may already know, sun damage causes wrinkles. Always wear sunscreen.

5. Poor diet- Too much sugar and processed carbs destroy collagen.

6. Stress-ย Our bodies have a wonderful way of dealing with short-term stress, the fight-or-flight response. However, they are not built to deal with chronic stress. Chronic stress leads to insulin resistance, which leads to high blood sugar, which leads to glycation, which leads to less elasticity in your skin.

7. Poor sleeping habits-ย Not getting enough sleep or quality sleep will raise your cortisol levels, leading to the breakdown of collagen and elastin.

In conclusion

With the skin on and around your lips being just as delicate as the skin around your eyes, these may be the areas where you see the first signs of aging.

You now know what to avoid and what you can do if these signs are creeping up on you.ย

  1. I sometimes fall victim to forgetting to care for my lips sometimes. Our lips are part of our skin. We should pay attention. Apart from making them feel younger, it is healthier when we care for it. As you rightly identified, a little massage will aid flow of oxygen around the lips. The top of it is when you keep it hydrated by applying lips serum. But you must avoid applying saliva on your lips. Rather, use a serum.

    1. I have also neglected to take care of my lips. You are correct that licking your lips will only make them worse.

  2. What an interesting and unique set of recommendations on ways to make your lips lookโ€ฆnew? Younger?ย

The thing that caught me off guard the most was the combination of brown sugar, honey and olive oil to exfoliate your lips. It sounds intriguing but I fear it would taste more delicious than anything.ย

But I do question, because Iโ€™ve heard conflicting recommendations as well. My thoughts were alway lack of water is why your lips were dried and that chapstick was not supposedly good for you. Have I been misinformed?

    1. Staying hydrated is very important. I have not heard of chapsticks being bad for you, but with any product you decide to use, you should always check the ingredient label.
