How much money do you spend each month on skincare products? Even though there are some outstanding products on the market, you could do a lot more for your skin.

Think about this for a minute. Even the most expensive scientifically proven product only penetrates so deep into your skin. I am not saying the skincare isn’t doing its job, it could just use a little help.

What am I talking about? Something that will penetrate your skin deep enough to actually stimulate the production of collagen and elastin painlessly.

In case you are wondering, collagen and elastin give your skin its bouncy firmness. As you age, the production of both slows. Not to mention, they are also under attack and destroyed by the sun, pollution, stress, and possibly your lifestyle.

What can go deep enough into your skin to bring back its bounce and firmness?

LED, of course!

How LED works

First, a brief history of LED (light-emitting diode). Did you know LED was first used by Nobel Prize winner Dr. Niels Ryberg? He used it to treat skin tuberculosis and won the Nobel Prize for his research in 1903.

Later, NASA started using it to grow plants in space, then it started being used by the Navy Seals to speed up wound healing.

So, the people in aesthetics decided they would do some research, and they introduced it into skincare.

LED light is easily absorbed into your skin, making it very effective.

While there are different colors that have different biological effects, red and blue are the most commonly used. Red LED is for anti-aging. It fights sagging and wrinkles by stimulating collagen and elastin. It is also very effective in pain relief.

Blue Led kills bacteria and shrinks sebaceous glands while combatting acne, scars, and redness.

You have already learned that red light is for anti-aging and blue combats acne problems. Combined, these two will also reduce redness and inflammation. But what do the other colors do?

Amber/Yellow will reduce discoloration by promoting circulation to undo sun damage and age spots and also improve your skin’s radiance.

Purple is for rejuvenation. This one will also fight acne, inflammation, scars, and sagging.

Green promotes drainage to balance oily skin and reduces melanin.

Light Bluish Green will reduce swollen capillaries and balance skin texture.

White penetrates the deepest and will speed skin metabolism to increase regeneration.

Is LED safe?

Yes.

If you have it done professionally and they use anything to make your skin more sensitive to the light, you may have some burning and swelling.

At-home devices aren’t as strong, so the only risk would be to your eyes. You will need to protect your eyes while using LED. Also, you don’t need to use LED directly after exfoliating because it will make your skin sensitive to the light. Otherwise, these are painless and safe.

How long till you see results?

Professional LED therapy usually comprises 10 treatments spaced about a week apart. Since their LED lights are stronger than at-home devices, you may notice some improvement on the first visit. Of course, you will notice a more significant improvement in the more treatments you receive.

The results aren’t permanent, and you will need to go back for maintenance.

With at-home devices, you may see results within a couple of weeks, depending on what skin condition you are treating. More prominent results come at the 4 to 6-week mark.

The cost

Depending on what you are having treated at a professional office, the cost can range anywhere from $25 to $250 per treatment.

At-home devices are definitely more cost and time- effective. You just have a one-time cost of buying the device and using it whenever you want. The cost of at-home devices ranges from $150 to $350.

At-home devices

When you are ready to choose an at-home device, you’ll want to keep in mind a couple of things.

First, what is the condition you are treating, then how big of an area you are treating?

If you only want to spot-treat certain areas such as around your eyes or lips, then a wand would be sufficient. If you are like me and want to get it all at one time, then you want a mask or panel.

LED for pain relief

If you are experiencing pain and limited physical function from inflammation, consider trying LED. It’s so much safer than anti-inflammatory and doesn’t have all the side effects.

Red light therapy relieves chronic inflammation by increasing blood flow and oxygenation to the area being treated. The wavelengths of light stimulate the cells and reduce oxidative stress.

  1. I find this very interesting, I just have a question as to whether or not you continue to use your skin care products as well as the LED Treatment.  I am thinking with aging skin you lose elasticity and collagen so would a person still want to use a good skin moisturizer or does the light help the skin to produce moisture?

    1. Yes, you absolutely keep using your products! You just add this to your routine. Where skincare products can only go so deep into your skin, LED penetrates deeper into your skin.

  2. I never had an issue with caring for my skin when I was in my 20s and 30s but upon reaching 40, I noticed that my skin’s texture changed a lot. Then it hit me; now that I’m older, I need to pay attention to caring for my skin.

So, I started using anti-aging moisturizing cream and spend time massaging my face and neck. I also try switching creams because I heard that using the same facial cream will not do the trick. But I’ve never considered LED because I have doubts if this is safe. Thank you for a very enlightening post. I was elated to learn that LED can help with sagging skin and wrinkles. Let’s face it; these are the two most common problems women face as they get older.

I am considering purple LED for rejuvenation but I wonder if it is safe to do it on my own. Or should I get a professional assessment and treatment first and then slowly switch to a home device?

    1. LED is safe for use, whether at home or by a professional. To get the full benefits of the creams you use, you need to give them at least 3 months before can decide if they are for you or not. If you keep changing them too often, you are not receiving the benefits they can supply.
