If you are anything like me, you have certain products you use that would have to be pried from your cold, dead hands before giving them up. Even though they aren’t natural or organic, per se.

In a recent article, I read about some ingredients that were used in products. I had to check and make sure my favorites didn’t include any of these. Thank goodness they didn’t.

It got me thinking, though, if I were using natural or organic products, I wouldn’t have had to even check.

This led to research on natural and organic product benefits and then to this article. So, keep reading to find out what I learned!

Don’t worry, I list the ingredients to look out for as well!

Difference between natural and organic

First, did you know there is a difference? To be honest, I knew there was, but I didn’t know what. Here is what I found, though.

Natural means the ingredients come from plants, flowers, or mineral origins you can find in nature. It also means when it’s manufactured, it keeps the integrity of the natural ingredients, there are no genetically modified ingredients (GMOs), no harmful substances, such as parabens and sulfates, and they’re not tested on animals.

So, natural means none of the ingredients were made in a lab. Synthetic is just the opposite.

However, just because it says natural doesn’t mean it’s completely chemical-free.

In the growing process, fertilizers or pesticides may have been necessary.

Organic products are nature-derived or plant-based and grown without the use of fertilizers or pesticides. For a brand to use organic or certified organic, the USDA requires that the ingredients are 95% organically produced.

If a product says it’s made with organic ingredients, then it doesn’t contain 95% required to be actually organic.

Benefits of natural and organic

1. No harmful ingredients

Some ingredients that are contained in skincare products, as well as other products, can cause cancer and skin allergies, and disrupt your endocrine system.

There’s a list below of harmful ingredients to look out for.

2. Fewer skin reactions

Since there aren’t any synthetics or added fragrances or dyes, your skin is less likely to have a reaction.

3. Can calm your skin

If something constantly irritates your skin, then switching to natural or organic could be the best choice for your skin.

4. No side effects to worry about

Since they are natural with nothing added during the process, there aren’t any chemicals to cause side effects.

5. Better for your health & well being

There are some ingredients that are added to common products, with continual use, that can have adverse effects on your reproductive, endocrine, and immune systems.

6. Cruelty-Free

They do not test these products on animals.

7. Sustainable

They are taken directly from nature; they are biodegradable and produce less waste, which makes them better for the environment.

8. Just as effective

Your skin doesn’t know the difference between an organic, natural, or synthetic product. It just comes down to the molecular structure and how your skin uses them. Organic, natural, and synthetic products are all equal in effectiveness.

9. Better for your skin

Even though products claim to be anti-aging, with some ingredients that are added in the manufacturing process, they can age you more in the long run.

10. May be more affordable

They don’t have the added costs of manufacturing and packaging, so the prices can be lower.

11. Gives you a fresher and brighter look

Aloe Vera and Virgin Coconut Oil are excellent examples of what to use for that natural glow.

Ingredients that are harmful

1. Parabens

Used as preservatives to keep your skincare germ free and fresh, they cause increased production of estrogen and disrupt reproductive and brain functions. Some studies have shown when parabens enter the skin, they mimic estrogen, causing an over division of cells in the breast, leading to breast cancer.

2. Phthalates

These are salts that make a product more spreadable. They are toxic to the reproductive system and development.

3. Sulfates

Also known as surfactants or detergents, they produce a lather that binds to oil, fat, grease, and dirt to remove them. High concentrations or industrial-made sulfates can cause diarrhea, intestinal pain, and lung irritation, and can dry out your skin.

If you have sensitive skin, or certain skin conditions, you could end up with dermatitis and edema.

4. Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives

Used as a preservative and to prevent the growth of bacteria, reactions can include eye irritation, sore throat, nausea, wheezing, skin rashes, and skin irritation. With prolonged exposure or at higher levels, it has been linked to cancer.

Names to look for include: polyoxymethylene urea, DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, diazolidinyl urea, bromopol, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine, glyoxal, and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate.

5. Diethanolamine

Used in cleansers for its foaming action, it’s a respiratory toxin and can cause cancer.

6. Talc

You probably already know they use this in powders and it’s linked to ovarian cancer. It also causes lung tumors when inhaled.

7. Toluene

Found mainly in hair dye and nail polish, they are a threat to your immune and nervous systems along with carrying a risk for birth defects and blood cancer.

8. Triclosan

Helps prevent or reduce bacteria. Some animal studies have shown a link to a decrease in thyroid hormones.

9. Ethanolamines

Also listed as monoethanolamine (MEA), diethanolamine (DEA), and triethanolamine (TEA), these are emulsifiers and known allergens. Especially if you have sensitive skin.

10. Oxybenzone

Used in sunscreens and can disrupt the endocrine system.

11. Siloxanes or silicones

Toxic to the environment and harms hormone function.

12. Polyethylene glycol or PEG compounds

Used as thickeners, they are irritating to the skin and have been linked to various cancers.

13. BHA & BHT

These chemical compounds are used as antioxidants and preservatives and are known as endocrine disruptors, and skin irritants, and may cause cancer.

14. Carbon Black

Commonly found in mascara and eyeliner, they link it to cancer and negative effects on organs.

15. Hydroquinone

Used for lightening the skin and is a known carcinogen.

16. Fragrance

Under this label could be hundreds of different chemicals that companies don’t have to disclose as trade secrets. They are required to be safe before being released to the public but may be associated with respiratory disorders, skin allergies, reproductive side effects, and dermatitis.

Have I scared you into switching your products?

To be honest, I kind of scared myself. I must admit, I went looking through all my products to see what the ingredients were, as you are probably now thinking of doing.

Switching to natural or organic will not be difficult because there are now tons of products on the market. Just remember to read the ingredient labels on your products before purchase.

Also, remember the USDA requires 95% of the product to be organic before they can label it organic or certified organic.
